Jeff Mills, born in Detroit, Michigan, emerged as a pivotal figure in electronic music, initially gaining recognition as radio DJ "The Wizard" on WDRQ and WJLB. In the late 1980s, he co-founded the influential techno collective Underground Resistance with 'Mad' Mike Banks and Robert Hood. Mills departed in 1991 to pursue a solo career, establishing the Chicago-based Axis Records in 1992, which became the primary outlet for his distinctive sound. Known for relentless, stripped-down, and often industrial DJ sets, he frequently employs three decks and a Roland TR-909 drum machine, crafting an aesthetic deeply influenced by science fiction and futurism. Signature releases include "The Bells" (1997, Purpose Maker), Waveform Transmission, Vol. 1 (1992, Tresor), and his score for Fritz Lang's Metropolis (2000, Axis).
