About

A pioneering architect of Detroit techno and influential house music innovator.

A foundational architect of Detroit techno, Kevin Saunderson is one of the fabled Belleville Three who defined the genre in the 1980s. Based in Detroit, Michigan, he gained global prominence through his Inner City project, which bridged underground techno with pop sensibilities through hits like Big Fun (1988, Virgin) and Good Life (1988, Virgin). Beyond his commercial success, he maintained a rigorous underground output under aliases such as E-Dancer, notably releasing the seminal album Heavenly (1998, Planet E). He founded the influential KMS Records in 1985, a label that has nurtured generations of electronic artists. Saunderson remains an active force in the scene, frequently performing alongside his sons and continuing to shape the evolution of house and techno through his label and live sets. His enduring relevance stems from his ability to balance the raw, mechanistic drive of early techno with a soulful, groove-oriented approach that remains a blueprint for modern dance music.
