About
Pioneering progressive house and techno duo known for hypnotic rhythms and iconic live performances.
Formed in Cardiff, Wales, in 1987, Underworld is the long-standing electronic project of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith. The duo gained global prominence in the 1990s by blending techno, house, and progressive elements with Hyde's signature stream of consciousness vocal delivery. Their seminal releases include the 1994 album Dubnobasswithmyheadman, the 1996 follow-up Second Toughest in the Infants, and the iconic 1996 single Born Slippy Nuxx. Known for immersive live performances and a career that spans film soundtracks and large-scale cultural events, the group continues to release experimental work such as the Drift series and 2024's Strawberry Hotel. Underworld remains a foundational force in electronic music, bridging the gap between underground rave culture and expansive, atmospheric sound design.
